UTS Global Announces
Essential Tape and Data Management Tools
for Mainframe Linux®

Santa Clara, CA - September 30, 2002 - UTS Global, LLC, the worldwide leader in Unix® and Linux® mainframe operating environments, today announced the immediate availability of their Tape Services Suite (TSS), a package of essential tape and data management tools for enterprise Linux systems. TSS raises the level of data reliability on enterprise Linux systems to the mainframe standard expected by large data centers.

As the core component of the Tape Services Suite, The Tape Management Subsystem (TSS-TMS) provides secure and convenient tape access for all users according to administrator-defined privileges. Any user can have direct access to the mainframe tape drive without having root privileges. TSS-TMS uses familiar commands such as standard operating system calls and standard mainframe tape labels, allowing enterprise Linux systems to share tape volumes with legacy mainframe systems. TSS-TMS supports standard mainframe drives — 3480/3490/E, 3590, and compatible drives. An extensive API provides the tools to build additional functionality.

"Using our Tape Services Suite allows Linux enterprises to benefit from the cost effectiveness of tape media without compromising the security or integrity of their business data," said Keith Schwamkrug, CEO of UTS Global, LLC.

The data management features of TSS-TMS allow enterprise administrators to monitor and control tape processes in real time, to add or remove tape drives without stopping other TSS-TMS processing or disturbing tape drives assigned to other LPARs, and to process simple text log files with standard Linux reporting tools.

Optional TSS components allow customers to select just the services they need. The native Backup and Restore (TSS-BAR) component provides essential protection for critical data through three different backup/restore modes and includes scheduling and logging. Tape Silo Feature (TSS-TSF) is a standalone ACSLS™ client that adds control access to StorageTek® tape silos. Distributed Tape Subsystem is a client and mainframe server tape solution for networked computers.

Trial versions of the Tape Services Suite components are available now for download from the UTS Global website, www.utsglobal.com. All components of the Tape Services Suite are supplied in standard binary RPM.
