UTS4.5 Features

There are several UTS Release 4.5 product enhancements, which include the following enhanced features and functions:

Resource Profiling Facility

UTS4 Code Profiling facility has been completely redesigned and rewritten to increase the accuracy of the system performance utilization and provides more meaningful reporting of the data collected. The new UTS Code Profiling facility provides full support for User and System processes running in UTS multiprocessing mode.

The UTS code profiling methodology has been changed from a sample-based system to a measurement system based on time-of-day (TOD) clock entry values. The prof(1) program script that formats this data has been changed to recognize the new format of the data. The prof(1) script also adds several new options: -u, -k and -S, which will display times in microseconds (usec), display the time spent sleeping during each routine, and display total time information (sum) respectively. The default display format of prof(1) is consistent with the original in order not to impact that any program the customer currently uses to read the output of prof(1).

New Network Controller Configuration Tool

UTS Release 4.5 adds a new network setup script netsetup(1m) to assist in configuring channel-attached network controllers and routers to the UTS host system. The netsetup script supports a variety of UTS network controller including Bus-Tech (BTI), Cisco 7000 routers, IBM 2216, IBM 3172, Network Systems Corp (NSC). Additionally, netsetup can be used to configure the IBM Open Systems Adapter (OSA) for LAN connectivity. This script allows the the User to create the configuration files that are used to create netstart, netshut and netinfo files. The netsetup script allows the user to define and configure multiple network controllers and their host interfaces, OEMI or ESCON physical channels. Prior to UTS Release 4.5 if the User required multiple controllers, the User had to individually define each network controller device, a very time-consuming and error-prone process.

4745 Asynchronous Terminal Device Driver

UTS Release 4.5 adds a new communications software device driver that supports asynchronous terminal connections through the Amdahl 4745 FEP, or equivalent network processor. The 4745 Asynchronous Terminal Device Driver (trm.c) specifically supports terminals connected via X.25 PAD networks through 4745/3745 or equivalent FEPs channel-connected to the UTS host system. Note, the 4745 Asynchronous Terminal Driver does not support X.25 dial-out to terminal users; only dial-in connections are supported.

File System Parallel Mount Processing Feature

This UTS system enhancement allowsthe User to concurrently mount multiple file systems in parallel rather than mount these serially. The User will see the largest benefit when they boot (IPL) the UTS system. The IPL time is significantly reduced, particularly in large configurations that have many file systems defined that span multiple physical disks.

Maintenance Package Version Tracking Command - pkgver(1)

The new pkgver(1) command provides the User a quick and easy to use method to determine the version numbers of each of the maintenance packages installed on the customer system. The pkgver(1) command provides the User with both the global view of which maintenance versions have been applied as well as the historical view that shows the order of maintenance versions that have been installed from the first maintenance version to the current maintenance version number.

UTS4.5 Release Information
  1. UTS Release 4.5 Problem Fixes - UTS Release 4.5 with the Update Tape (UTS.UPDATE.450000) includes a significant number of Problem Fixes (MRs). Approximately 70 Problem Fixes are included in the cumulative set of Maintenance Updates since UTS Release 4.4.009. These MRs are listed on the UTS Global Web site at http://www.utsglobal.com, under Support, <Click> Download Latest UTS4.5 Patches/Components.

  2. Upgrade Prerequisites and Compatibility with Prior UTS Releases - In order to upgrade from UTS Release 4.4 to UTS Release 4.5 customers must first have upgraded their UTS Release 4.4 system to patch level UTS44.014 with one of the following incremental tfix packages:

    • UTS44.440.127 (Applies to 44.014)
    • UTS44.440.134 (Applies to 44.014)
    • UTS44.440.136 (Applies to 44.014)
    • UTS44.1x.41 (or higher release)

These incremental tfix packages contain MR66270 that created a backward compatibility problem. This MR must be installed before any attempt to install UTS Release 4.5 on an existing UTS44.014 system.

UTS Release 4.5 is binary compatible with all earlier UTS 4 releases. Customer applications developed UTS-4 based releases will execute without recompilation on UTS release 4.5 providing customer applications follow the rules detailed in the bincompat(5) manpage.

  3. System Requirements - UTS Release 4.5 is supported on the following S/390 model processors:

    • Amdahl 5990, 5995A, 5995M series of ECL processors
    • Amdahl Millennium Global Server series of CMOS processors
    • IBM ES/9000/9021 series of ECL processors
    • IBM G4, G5 & G6 Servers (the 9672 R and X series of CMOS processors)
